The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1) by Jessica Townsend

4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

I can’t remember a book I have had more fun with in the past year than “The Trials of Morrigan Crow”. Before I had even hit the half way mark I was texting my sister, my cousin, my friend saying “you need to read this, now!”

“The Trials of Morrigan Crow” follows a young girl on the eve of her 11th birthday. Morrigan had the misfortune of being born on the last day of a twelve year cycle, this of course means she is cursed and the cause of all the problems in her home town. Her cursed state also guarantees she’ll die on the eve of the next twelve year cycle. Her father is an important man in the government who’s trying to mitigate the damage his daughter (by her cursed nature) brings to the town while also trying to climb the political ladder. Needless to say there isn’t too much love lost between father and daughter and when Morrigan is whisked away to a magical town on the eve of her death she encounters a life and friendships she’s never dreamed of. But she can’t stay unless she proves herself, and to prove herself she has to find out what it is about her that sets her apart from everyone in this magical town where no one is ordinary and everyone has a talent.

This book took on a lot in terms of scope but it felt so effortless while reading. Jessica Townsend perfectly contained her plot and world and they fit together with natural ease. Among so many good things to say about this novel the best part is the different personalities. Even the characters you aren’t supposed to like are interesting and complete. And I’ll tell you what, I need a Jupiter North in my own life.

Not since Harry Potter have I read a book (for younger audiences) with such a magnetic pull. The imagery, the characters, the secrets, are all such fun. Can you tell I’m gushing here? I practically ooze happiness just talking about it. So do yourself a favor and read this book. Even if your spouse rolls their eyes and ever so slightly turns up their nose when you explain what “middle grade” is, do not let that stop you from wholeheartedly enjoying this gem.
