City of Thieves by David Benioff

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

There is so much to like about this book. It’s got real depth, but still fairly short. Its characters are full of life without being cliché. It’s atmospheric, intelligent, and even occasionally fun; there is really only one problem with this book-it feels like a freakishly talented frat boy wrote it. Seriously, the amount of content about male parts, female parts, bodily functions, sex, masturbation, etc. was way too much. I could perhaps have over looked it if it was contained to a chapter here or there but alas, it was everywhere. It felt as though I was anticipating my favorite dessert only to have someone sneeze all over my food right as I began to eat. I really was so thrilled and disappointed at the same time. The prose is so wonderful, I highlighted many passages simply because of their beauty and way of capturing a concept perfectly, but at the end of the day I can’t recommend this one with a full endorsement. What’s more is that I’m not convinced the author had any real purpose to put the adult content in, I don’t feel the sexual theme meant anything. Otherwise, this was a truly spectacular read.
