First of all, let me be clear that this book has no relationship to “50 shades of Grey”. It is a lovely coming of age story of a 15 year old Lithuanian girl, taken from her home and deported to Stalin’s work camps. It is a breath of fresh air a midst a hundred other holocaust books. It tells of the confusion and pain of being caught between two evils (Hitler and Stalin) and how Stalin really wasn’t any better than Hitler. I liked Ruta Sepetys writing style and pacing and how she shed light on a little known aspect of WWII. I thought her characters realistic and rightly flawed, and the mention of Munch and his artistry was a nice touch. I really enjoyed this one.
